Abstract:
The Draft International Standard (DIS) version of ISO 26262 provides the opportunity for the automobile industry to improve their product development processes with the ever increasing complexity of products. This standard addresses the process requirements needed for the functional safety aspects to control the reliability of the electronic/electrical elements that are developed for the car. Each new standard is similar to the learning of a new language that has new words, grammar and structure. If the standard's new terms, definitions and rules of key importance are misunderstood or wrongly interpreted, then its objective may not be obtained. As in each language “context controls the meaning”, the standard’s new terms must be clear to the user. This paper affects only the part 1 of ISO 26262 providing a suggestion on how to understand the important terms enabling the practitioners to achieve the intended safety goal. © 2010 Inside Publishing.
