Abstract:

The world has evolved into what is known as Globalisation. It features expansion, integration, interdependence and mobility. In this context, competition pushes industries to their outer limits. Technological risk related to increasingly complex industry processes has developed with effects that have no precedence in history. The increasing awareness of the changes in our environment has raised new concerns on a global level; again – globalisation. The business of safety, strategies for loss and accident prevention are presented at the front line in all debates in search of new efficient business practices and protection of assets, people and the environment. International standards, national legislation and accident reports all foster a series of measures for the development of safety programs, good engineering practice and positive safety culture. This article will discuss a number of these aspects and invite the reader to engage in the development of professional competence. © 2009 Inside Publishing. All Rights Reserved.
