About Me (Bio): Thomas A. Walczak has been involved with system design and control applications for over 35 years. He has served as a critical control system consultant for Allen-Bradley, GE, NASA Manned Flight Programs, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Westinghouse Nuclear, Boeing, Texaco, Chevron, Caltex, Petronas, CNOOC, and many other clients. Currently Thom is a Global Critical Control Consultant at Conversions Inc.

Since 1980 Thom has taught control system safety and has conducted seminars globally in 34 countries. In 1984, Thom developed and taught the first ISA Process Safety System courses in Houston, Texas, and later was an instructor for ISA Training in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, and India. He has been a guest lecturer on safety at TUV for several International Safety Symposiums.

As a design engineer, his concept for the first fully modular simplex, dual, and triple safety redundant system for the process industry earned him an IPC industry award in 1988. This design was the first system certified to AK Class 6 for energized and de-energized operation. As lead engineer for the first VME-based TMR PLC system for Aero-Derivative Gas Fired Turbine’s, his system analysis and design for rotating machinery, fire and gas, and emergency shutdown systems has increased overall system safety.

Serving as the Director for the Computer Technology Division for ISA, Thom has provided a forum for the discussion of important industry concerns involving the application of control systems. As a voting member, Thom contributed to the S.84.01; E/E/PES Safety Interlock ANSI/ISA standard, T.84.02 Technical Report, and S.91; Identifying Safety Related Equipment, as well as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. Author and contributor to various industry related magazines, Thom has numerous published papers and articles.
